NOK (released 10/2000 on MEGO, Vienna) Clicks, Clicks, Clicks allerorten. Eigentlich hat man diese fisseligen Spratzer mittlerweile etwas über, jedoch nimmt einen die muntere Art, auf die die Tracks dieser 3”-CD munter vor sich hinswingen und -klingen einmal mehr für sich ein. Die hier anzutreffende charmant verhuschte Art mit einhergehender Intensität ist von seltener Qualität, und die Souveränität der Umsetzung verweist manch andere diese Phänomene Auslotenden mit einigem Abstand auf die weiteren Plätze. Kurze, prägnante und auf den Punkt gebrachte Musik, wie man sie vielleicht vom Flagschiff der ICMC erwarten wuerde und auch verpackungstechnisch wieder einen kleinen Schritt weiter als der Rest (will sagen, dass das formschöne Plastikcover vermutlich erst beim zweiten Runterfallen zerbricht). This 3-CD contains an 18-minute suite, "Nok." This piece won an honorary mention at the Prix Ars Electronica 2000. Electro-acoustics with a pulse, "Nok" combines electronic blips, percussive sounds of an unknown origin, and sound art in a playful, almost cartoonish piece. The beat changes from one part to the next, taking very strange forms at times, a bit like the creature of the cover artwork -- is this extraterrestrial dance music? Nok shows strong talent and a healthy humanistic approach to the genre. Troyer, Koch aus Leidenschaft, verwertet hier möglicherweise den Klang filetierter Tomaten und gehackter Zwiebeln, pürierter Erdäpfel, brodelnder Suppen oder Saucen, Salatschüsseln und Schneebesen, Pfeffermühlen und auf Schneidebrettern herkumhackender Küchenbeile um sie in sechs witzige, zarte und streckenweise groovige Tracks einzuwecken. The debut release by Vienna’s Troyer, this 3” CdEp is a heads-up to those who search out this kind of scratchy melodic noise to pay attention to this aspiring genius. Supposedly constructed, along with the usual digital drop-outs and glitches, from taps and rhythms of Troyer in his kitchen, the six tracks (all Nok variations) range from prickly headphonics (2) to red-lined beat deconstructions (5) to clockwork electronica (6). It’s amazing what able hands and a creative mind can make sound, well, amazing, while other with the same tools end up sounding like birds fighting in your gutters. Troyer is one to watch out for. www.faqtmagazine.com This is the debut release for Uli Troyer, a Vienna-based sound artist who spends his time creating “soundtracks for imaginary cartoons using digital errors, combining them with organic sounds and rhythms of the kitchen”, or so says the press release. But the description really is fitting. The sounds on this 18 minute disc are full of quirky, almost cartoonish personality and buoyancy, giving this music an admirable boost beyond the “microwave” cliches of sterile clicks and cuts. Listening to the disc’s introduction is like watching particles at play: delicate and high pitched crackles and whistles, a brief and sudden bass tone, and then a bubbling and compelling rhythm develops. The tracks fold into one another, the rhythms are always developing or branching off into their own clusters. Troyer uses a very healthy and diverse sound palette which provides the listener with ample opportunities and sonic spaces for exploration. Sometimes quirky, sometimes more abrasive, but always fascinating, NOK makes for another very fine release from Mego, and comes highly recommended. Packaged in a cute 3 inch jewel case. Suoni organici che rilasciano tutto il loro potenziale nutritivo apparentemente esotico, viste pure le frequenze di contorno. Tutto sommato però un buon pranzetto per gli alieni ameboidi della grafica, e un discreto assaggio di click vuoti, risucchi pieni e blob saltuari, a volte in classica sequenza melodica. www.neural.it |
